How to Get Rid of Box Elder Bugs at Home

What Are Box Elder Bugs?

Box elder bugs are black and red insects about half an inch long. They feed on box elder, maple, and ash trees during spring and summer.

In fall, they migrate in large numbers toward warm structures — including your home. They squeeze through gaps around windows, doors, and foundations looking for a place to overwinter.

Are They Harmful?

Box elder bugs do not bite, sting, or cause structural damage. However, large groups inside your home are unpleasant, and their waste can stain light-colored surfaces.

The best approach is prevention before they enter in large numbers.

Step 1 — Seal Entry Points Before Fall

Inspect your home in late summer. Seal cracks around window frames, door thresholds, utility pipes, and siding gaps with silicone caulk. Install or replace door sweeps on all exterior doors.

Box elder bugs can enter through surprisingly small gaps. Pay special attention to the south and west-facing sides of your home, which warm up faster and attract more insects.

Step 2 — Create a Perimeter Barrier

Apply Sulguy Bifenthrin Concentrate around your home's foundation, window frames, doorways, and eaves. Dilute according to label directions and spray a 2–3 foot band around the perimeter.

This creates a long-lasting contact barrier that stops box elder bugs and other fall invaders before they cross the threshold. Reapply after heavy rain.

Step 3 — Use Peppermint Spray at Entry Points

Spray Sulguy Peppermint Bug Spray along window sills, door frames, and wall vents. The strong natural scent deters box elder bugs from clustering on treated surfaces.

Reapply weekly during peak migration season (September to November). This is especially useful for apartment dwellers or renters who cannot apply perimeter treatments.

Step 4 — Catch Stragglers With Glue Traps

Place Sulguy Crawling Insect Glue Traps along baseboards, in corners, and near windows. Any box elder bugs that make it inside will be captured before they spread through the home.

Check and replace traps weekly. A sudden spike in caught insects tells you where the entry gap is, so you can seal it.

Step 5 — Treat Crawling Activity Indoors

For active infestations inside the home, apply Sulguy Crawling Pest Control Powder Spray along baseboards and in wall voids where bugs are congregating. It is odorless and safe for indoor use once dry.

Alternatively, dust Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth with Peppermint in crawl spaces, attic edges, and wall openings where box elder bugs tend to cluster during winter.

Outdoor Prevention Tips

If possible, remove or trim box elder trees close to your home. Fewer trees nearby means fewer bugs attracted to your property each fall.

Clear leaf litter, wood piles, and debris from around your foundation. These provide shelter for box elder bugs during their migration and make your home a more attractive overwintering site.

Use Sulguy Bamboo Charcoal Bags in storage areas and garages where box elder bugs tend to hide, to keep those spaces fresh and less hospitable.
