Why Moving In Is the Best Time to Pest-Proof
An empty home gives you full access to walls, floors, cabinets, and entry points — with no furniture in the way. Treating before moving in means you can apply products thoroughly without disruption, and start with a clean baseline. Once furniture and boxes arrive, pest-proofing becomes much harder.
Step 1 — Inspect for Entry Points
Walk the entire property and identify all potential pest entry points:
- Gaps around water pipes under sinks and behind appliances
- Cracks in baseboards, walls, and floor edges
- Gaps under doors and around door frames
- Holes in window screens
- Gaps where utility cables enter the property
Seal all gaps with caulk or expanding foam. Install door sweeps on exterior doors. For a complete list of hiding spots, read The Hidden Places Pests Breed in Your Home.
Step 2 — Apply Diatomaceous Earth Before Furniture Arrives
With the home empty, dust Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth Powder along all baseboards, inside cabinet bases, under appliance spaces, and around pipe entry points. It provides ongoing protection against cockroaches, ants, silverfish, and other crawling insects.
Step 3 — Spray Peppermint Along Entry Points
Apply Sulguy Peppermint Spray along all windowsills, door frames, and entry points before moving furniture in. This creates a scent barrier that deters insects and rodents from entering treated areas.
Step 4 — Place Monitoring Traps
Set Sulguy Insect Glue Traps in key locations — under the kitchen sink, inside cabinets, behind appliances, and along walls. Leave for 1–2 weeks before moving in fully to monitor whether any pest activity is present in the property.
Step 5 — Place UV Trap for Flying Insects
Run Sulguy UV Mosquito Trap overnight in the main living areas before moving in. Catch and assess what flying insects are present in the space.
Ongoing Maintenance After Moving In
Reapply diatomaceous earth monthly in high-risk areas. Reapply peppermint spray every 1–2 weeks. Check glue traps weekly and replace when full. For a complete guide to keeping your new home pest-free, read How to Keep Bugs Out Without Chemicals.
