How to Check Used Furniture for Cockroaches

A secondhand dresser can be a great find. Hidden pest activity is less welcome. Inspect used furniture before loading it into your vehicle, especially pieces with drawers, hollow frames, or enclosed storage.

A clean appearance does not guarantee a pest-free item. The goal is to check concealed spaces and make a practical decision before the furniture reaches your living area.

Bring a flashlight and ask about storage

Ask where the furniture was kept and whether the seller has noticed insects. A vague answer is not proof of a problem, but it is a reason to inspect carefully.

Use a bright flashlight. With permission, remove drawers and examine the underside, back panel, joints, screw holes, and corners. Avoid reaching into spaces you cannot see.

Look beyond the outside surfaces

Pay attention to narrow gaps where panels meet. Look for live insects, shed skins, dark specks, and capsule-shaped egg cases. Photograph suspicious findings rather than assuming every mark is a cockroach sign.

Our guide to cockroach droppings explains common warning signs. For a closer look at possible egg cases, read where cockroach egg cases may hide.

Check the packaging too. Cardboard can conceal activity even when the furniture looks clean. See our cardboard storage checklist before reusing old moving boxes.

When to leave the item behind

If you see live roaches, multiple suspicious egg cases, or widespread signs, passing on the furniture is the simplest way to avoid bringing that risk home.

Do not rely on a quick spray, perfume, or a wipe-down to clear hidden activity. Avoid applying pesticides to furniture unless the label specifically permits the material and use site.

If the furniture is already home

Keep it away from food storage and sleeping areas while you inspect. Do not move a suspicious piece through several rooms. Remove its packaging and check nearby hiding places.

Vacuum accessible seams when appropriate for the furniture. Seal and discard collected debris outdoors. Cleaning removes debris but cannot establish that every concealed space is pest-free.

Sulguy Insect & Pest Glue Traps can support monitoring around nearby wall edges when used as directed. Keep adhesive traps out of reach of children and pets.

A trap without a catch is not a certificate that the furniture is clear. Record where you place monitors and check them regularly alongside visual inspections.

When professional help makes sense

Seek identification and treatment advice if you find repeated activity, cannot inspect the piece thoroughly, or suspect insects have spread. In an apartment, notify building management when appropriate.
