Dark specks inside a cabinet can be unsettling. Before choosing a treatment, check whether the marks appear alongside other signs of cockroach activity.
Droppings vary with species and size. Small roaches may leave pepper-like specks, while larger roaches can leave more distinct pellets. Food crumbs and other pests can leave similar clues.
Start with location, not just appearance
Use a flashlight to inspect cabinet corners, plumbing openings, drawer tracks, and accessible spaces beneath appliances. Look for clusters near sheltered edges rather than isolated marks.
Do not open electrical equipment or reach into machinery. Photograph suspicious material before cleaning, noting the location and date.
Additional clues include live insects, shed skins, and egg cases. Use our guide to early cockroach signs to organize your inspection.
Could it be something else?
Appearance is not a reliable species test. Mouse droppings, food debris, and insect fragments may be confused, especially in dim or dusty spaces.
If rodent waste is possible, avoid sweeping or vacuuming it. Follow public-health guidance for rodent cleanup or contact a pest professional before disturbing the material.
If identification remains uncertain, send clear photographs to a local extension service or a licensed pest professional. Include a size reference beside the material without touching it.
Clean carefully and remove competing food
Keep children and pets away from the inspection area. Wear gloves, avoid raising dust, and use an appropriate cleaning method for the surface and suspected material.
Discard contaminated food and clean food-contact surfaces according to the cleaning product directions. Repair leaks and store pantry goods in sealed containers.
Do not mix cleaning products. Anyone with asthma or sensitivity should avoid handling suspected pest debris and consider professional assistance.
Monitor before deciding where to treat
After cleanup, take fresh photos and check whether new evidence appears. Old marks alone cannot tell you whether an infestation is still active.
Consider Sulguy Insect & Pest Glue Traps for monitoring where the product directions allow. Keep adhesive surfaces inaccessible to children, pets, and non-target animals.
Record where insects are caught and when. Monitoring helps focus inspection; it does not replace source removal or a treatment plan.
Choose treatment based on confirmed activity
If cockroaches are confirmed, address food, moisture, and hiding places together. For suitable labeled locations, review Sulguy Cockroach Gel Bait and follow every label precaution.
Our gel bait placement guide provides additional context. The product label controls where, how, and how much to apply.
Seek professional help for repeated daytime sightings, widespread activity, inaccessible harborages, or recurring problems in a multi-unit building. Notify your property manager when shared spaces may be involved.
