How to Eliminate Bed Bugs Without Calling an Exterminator

How to Eliminate Bed Bugs Without Calling an Exterminator

Understanding the Bed Bug Life Cycle

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood at night. They hide in mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and nearby furniture during the day. A single female lays 1–5 eggs per day — an infestation grows quickly if untreated. Effective elimination requires treating all life stages: eggs, nymphs, and adults.

Step 1 — Confirm the Infestation

Look for these signs:

  • Small reddish-brown bugs in mattress seams and folds
  • Tiny white eggs (about 1mm) in crevices
  • Dark brown or rust-colored fecal spots on sheets and mattress edges
  • Itchy bite marks in lines or clusters on skin

Step 2 — Heat Treatment for Bedding and Clothing

Wash all bedding, clothing, and curtains in the hottest setting possible and dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Bed bugs and their eggs die at temperatures above 50°C. Bag and seal items that can't be washed and leave in a hot car or sealed black bag in sunlight for several hours.

Step 3 — Apply Diatomaceous Earth

Dust Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth Powder along mattress edges, bed frame joints, baseboards, and any cracks near the bed. DE kills bed bugs by damaging their exoskeletons — effective against all stages except eggs. Leave in place and reapply after vacuuming.

Step 4 — Place Glue Traps to Intercept

Sulguy Insect Glue Traps placed under bed legs intercept bed bugs travelling from the floor to the bed. They also monitor population levels — decreasing catches indicate the treatment is working.

Step 5 — Vacuum Thoroughly and Repeatedly

Vacuum the mattress, box spring, bed frame, and surrounding floor thoroughly. Pay special attention to seams, folds, and crevices. Immediately empty the vacuum into a sealed bag and dispose of it outside. Vacuum every 2–3 days during treatment.

How Long Does DIY Treatment Take?

A moderate bed bug infestation treated consistently with heat, DE, and trapping typically shows significant reduction within 2–3 weeks and full elimination within 4–6 weeks. Consistency is essential — missing steps allows eggs to hatch and restart the cycle.
