What Are Gnats and Why Are They So Hard to Eliminate?
Gnats is a catch-all term for several tiny flying insects — fungus gnats, drain gnats, and eye gnats are the most common household types.
Fungus gnats breed in moist potting soil and are the most frequent indoor culprit. Drain gnats breed in the organic buildup inside sink and shower drains.
They multiply so fast because a single female can lay up to 300 eggs in her lifetime — often in places you'd never think to treat.
Step 1: Find Where They're Breeding
Before treating, you must locate the breeding source — otherwise gnats will keep coming back no matter what you spray.
Check houseplants first: stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it's consistently moist, fungus gnats are likely breeding there.
Check drains next: place a piece of tape sticky-side-down over the drain overnight. If gnats are stuck to it in the morning, your drain is a breeding site.
Also check fruit bowls, recycling bins, and any area with standing water or rotting organic matter.
How to Eliminate Fungus Gnats in Houseplants
Let the top 2–3 inches of soil dry out completely between waterings. Fungus gnat larvae cannot survive in dry soil — this alone breaks their life cycle.
Apply Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth as a top dressing on the soil surface. It kills larvae crawling to the surface and deters adults from laying new eggs.
For severe infestations, replace the top layer of potting soil entirely and treat the pot with DE before adding fresh soil.
How to Eliminate Drain Gnats
Pour boiling water down affected drains twice daily for one week — this kills larvae and softens the organic buildup they feed on.
Follow up with a baking soda and vinegar flush to break down remaining debris. The fizzing action dislodges buildup from pipe walls.
Use Sulguy Crawling Pest Control Powder Spray around the drain exterior and under the sink to eliminate any adults resting nearby.
Trapping Adult Gnats
While you treat breeding sources, trap the existing adult population to reduce numbers fast.
Sulguy Fly Strip Glue Traps hung near houseplants and windows capture gnats in large numbers without chemicals. Replace weekly during active infestations.
The Sulguy UV Mosquito Trap also attracts and captures fungus gnats and drain gnats effectively — place it near the kitchen or bathroom at night for best results.
Preventing Gnats From Returning
Water houseplants only when the top inch of soil is dry. Overwatering is the single biggest cause of fungus gnat infestations.
Store ripe fruit in the refrigerator and empty recycling bins at least twice a week. Remove any decaying food immediately.
Spray Sulguy Peppermint Bug Spray around windowsills and entry points — the strong scent deters gnats and other flying insects from entering.
Keep bamboo charcoal bags near plant areas to absorb excess moisture from the air, making the environment less hospitable for gnat breeding.
When Gnats Keep Coming Back
If gnats persist after 2–3 weeks of treatment, there's likely a hidden breeding site you haven't found yet. Common overlooked spots include: under appliances, inside floor drains, in overwatered outdoor plants near windows, and inside garbage disposal units.
Do a full audit of every moisture source in your home and treat each one systematically. Consistency for 4–6 weeks is usually enough to fully break the cycle.
For crawling pest infestations that accompany gnat problems, Sulguy Crawling Insect Glue Traps provide additional monitoring and capture across floors and baseboards.
