What Are Silverfish and Why Are They Destructive?
Silverfish are small, wingless insects with a distinctive silver sheen and a fish-like wriggling movement. They feed on carbohydrates — specifically starches and sugars found in paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue, fabric, and food residue. A silverfish infestation left untreated can destroy books, clothing, wallpaper, and stored documents over time.
Where Silverfish Hide
Silverfish thrive in dark, humid environments. Common locations:
- Behind bookshelves and inside stored boxes of books
- Inside wardrobes and among stored clothing
- Bathroom cabinets and under sinks
- Kitchen pantries near dried goods
- Wall cavities and basement areas
Step 1 — Reduce Humidity
Silverfish need humidity above 75% to survive. Use a dehumidifier in problem rooms. Fix any leaking pipes. Increase ventilation in bathrooms and storage areas. Without adequate moisture, silverfish populations collapse naturally over time.
Step 2 — Apply Diatomaceous Earth
Dust Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth Powder along bookshelves, inside wardrobe bases, behind furniture, and in any dark undisturbed areas where silverfish travel. DE kills silverfish within 24–48 hours of contact by damaging their exoskeletons. Reapply monthly and after any cleaning.
Step 3 — Place Glue Traps to Monitor and Catch
Place Sulguy Insect Glue Traps inside wardrobes, behind bookshelves, and in bathroom cabinets. Silverfish are nocturnal and travel along edges — traps placed along walls and in corners will catch the most. Check weekly and replace when full.
Step 4 — Apply Peppermint Spray as a Deterrent
Spray Sulguy Peppermint Spray inside wardrobe edges, along bookshelves, and around bathroom cabinets. The strong scent deters silverfish from inhabiting treated areas. Reapply every 1–2 weeks.
Step 5 — Protect Vulnerable Items
- Store books in sealed plastic containers or boxes in dry areas
- Keep clothing in sealed garment bags
- Store dried food in airtight containers
- Reduce paper clutter and old cardboard boxes — prime silverfish habitat
