Why Kitchens Become Pest Hotspots in Summer
Warm temperatures accelerate insect reproduction cycles dramatically. Cockroach eggs hatch faster, ant colonies expand to find more food, and fruit fly eggs can become adults in just 8 days when it's hot.
The good news: a simple, layered prevention routine can keep all three under control — without toxic sprays near your food prep areas.
The Kitchen Pest Trio: Know What You're Dealing With
Most summer kitchen infestations involve one or more of three culprits: cockroaches (hiding behind appliances and in cabinets), ants (trailing in from outside to reach food and water), and fruit flies (breeding in overripe fruit, drains, and recycling bins).
Each requires a slightly different approach, but many prevention steps work against all three at once.
Step 1: Seal All Food Sources
Transfer dry goods — cereal, flour, sugar, pet food — into airtight containers. Cockroaches and ants can chew through thin plastic bags in hours. Don't leave fruit on the counter once it starts to soften.
Wipe down surfaces after every meal, including the stovetop, microwave interior, and toaster crumb tray. These are primary cockroach feeding sites.
Step 2: Deploy Cockroach Gel Bait in Key Spots
For cockroaches, nothing beats targeted bait. Apply small dots of Sulguy Cockroach Gel Bait behind the fridge, under the sink, inside cabinet hinges, and at the back of drawers.
The bait is highly attractive to roaches and works through transfer — one roach carries it back to the nest. Apply fresh bait every 3–4 weeks during summer.
Step 3: Stop Ants at the Entry Point
Ants enter kitchens through gaps around pipes and window sills. Spray Sulguy Peppermint Bug Spray along the base of walls, window frames, and any gap you can identify as an entry route. Peppermint is a strong deterrent for ants and is completely safe near food prep surfaces when dry.
For persistent ant trails, apply a thin line of Sulguy Diatomaceous Earth along the trail path. It disrupts their exoskeleton and breaks the trail within 24–48 hours.
Step 4: Eliminate Fruit Fly Breeding Sites
Pour boiling water or a baking soda and vinegar mix down sink drains once a week — this destroys fruit fly larvae breeding in the drain film. Empty and rinse your recycling bin weekly.
Remove any overripe or damaged fruit immediately. One piece of rotting mango can produce hundreds of fruit flies in days.
Step 5: Use Glue Traps to Monitor and Catch
Place Sulguy Crawling Insect Glue Traps under the sink and behind the fridge to passively monitor cockroach activity and catch any that the gel bait doesn't reach.
For fruit flies and flying insects near the bin or counter, hang Sulguy Fly Strips above the recycling area — they capture flying insects without any chemicals or odors.
Step 6: Treat Crawling Pests Behind Appliances
Refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens create warm, dark spaces that cockroaches and crawling pests love. Once a month, pull out your appliances and spray the gap behind them with Sulguy Crawling Pest Control Powder Spray. It's odorless, fast-drying, and effective against a wide range of crawling insects.
For severe infestations or as a perimeter reinforcement, a diluted application of Sulguy Bifenthrin Concentrate around the kitchen perimeter provides long-lasting residual control. Keep surfaces dry before food prep and follow label directions.
Maintain a Clean Kitchen Routine All Season
The single most effective pest prevention measure is reducing food and moisture availability. Wipe surfaces nightly, fix dripping taps immediately, and take out trash before bed. Combined with targeted products, this keeps your kitchen pest-free through the hottest months.
